Sometimes the universe takes care of you in unexpected ways. Last year I participated in an Art in Bloom event at The Gallery at Flat Rock. The piece I choose for floral interpretation was a very compelling black and white photo, “Blown Away”. When doing this type of project the fun part, (for me at least!) is coming up with a design that represents the art, yet is not literal. I also like to provoke discussion. Art is subjective, so some viewers often form opinions of floral designs, (I like this/don’t like this) based on personal taste, as opposed to design principles. I like to shake it up and challenge the viewer, which is why the design is very contemporary, with minimal, yet specific use of flowers.
Because I had to work, the piece was installed in the gallery with the photograph, and I left, unable to attend the preview party. I was told that Sharon Lee, the photographer was extremely ill, and possibly unable to attend the show as well. This was sad news as I really wanted to meet her. The next morning Suzanne gave me a call with the news that during the party, someone inadvertently bumped into my design, and it smashed on the floor. (My heart went out to Suzanne, as that must have been a difficult call to make!) At that juncture, I made the the decision that sometimes art is indeed transient, and stuff just happens….all will be well!
I received an email from Suzanne recently, letting me know that WNC Magazine is featuring Art in Bloom at The Gallery At Flat Rock as the top thing to do this coming Memorial Weekend, and that Melissa Reardon from the magazine chose the photo of my piece for the article!! Wow. She also shared the sad news that Sharon Lee, the photographer has passed away. I am so deeply moved to think that my design and that amazing photograph will be featured in such a special way! I hope Sharon is looking down and is as honored as I am!
